A Lovely Creation

Tragically, I have noticed photographers become increasingly competitive with one another instead of leaning on each other in times of difficulty and rejoicing together in success. This current pattern hurts my heart and I have been longing for some time to build authentic relationships with other wedding professionals. When I came across the information for Mike Larson’s workshop I sensed that this was the chance I was looking for. Figuring we didn’t have much to lose, my good friend Valerie and I decided to pack our bags and head for the Central Coast for what was sure to be a lovely week with other creatives.

We arrived at the beautiful Green Gate Ranch in San Luis Obispo and took one big breath of fresh air. Getting out in the country will do that for you, but more than that, I could immediately feel a difference in Mike, Rachel and the other workshop attendees. All people who craved the same authenticity I did, people changed by their relationship with Jesus Christ. Great refreshment came from my time spent with these people that I now get to call friends. Together we learned more about business and ourselves, photographed beautiful things, ate the most delicious meals, and glorified the Lord in it all.

I personally learned a lot about balance and not being all things to all people. As I align my life by the things that are most important to me, first and foremost being my relationship with God, everything else falls into place and I find the weights of the world are lifted. It’s easy to set unrealistic margins and not count the costs of our goals before we aggressively pursue them, tromping over anything blocking our path. When our priorities our properly inline, comparison is completely futile because we cannot see other people’s margins and cost. What may be worth it to someone will not always be worth the cost for me, and I no longer want to allow my joy to be stolen by the patterns of the world.

Creating brings glory to our Creator. I am grateful for a gift that allows me to be in a creative industry and work that never feels like a job. Over the next few months I will get to share some beautiful collaborations with incredible talent, but until then photos of the lovely Green Gate Ranch will have to tide you over!
